Duties/Responsibilities
Center for New Americans Support and Administration-45%
- Assist the Center's Director, three faculty members and two teaching fellows with overseeing, coordinating and administering the Center for New Americans goals and benchmarks. Benchmarks include: Initiation of cases with the potential for significant positive change to existing law, administrative regulations, or policies (near term); Expanding asylum protection for victims of persecution (long term); Triple the number of appellate and district court matters handled locally from 8 to 24 (long term); Establishment of programs to provide noncitizens legal education and advice (near term); Steady growth in client service and program effectiveness (long term); and Publication and dissemination of educational materials leading t! o reputation as leading provider (near and long term).
- Implementing policies created by the Center director and creating procedures to realize these policies, which will directly impact the Center for New Americans;
- Coordinate Center budgets. Track expenses of the Center, identify issues with the distribution of funds and recommend solutions; will require working with the Law School finance department closely; will require reporting information to the Robina Foundation; and working with the Center director to identify startup costs, annual overhead and project future budgetary expenditures.
- Create and coordinate Center communications and liaison with Center's partner organizations: collect and maintain data for reports to funders; develop reports to funders and grant proposals and produce newsletters;
- Plan and coordinate Center events at the law school as well as at off-site locations, including conferences, receptions, and meetings; !
- Independently complete administrative projects assigned by Center ! Faculty and Fellows, by planning and developing processes of how best to reach the project objective.
- Maintain and update the Center's website weekly.
- Integrate Law Clinic policy and procedures into the Center's clinic programs.
- Provide full range of clerical support to Center faculty and fellows, and assist law students: structure and maintain law clinic legal files; process legal correspondence and legal documents; schedule meetings; process mail; respond to inquiries; prepare and copy teaching materials and clinic manuals; make travel arrangements; prepare expense reports;
- Opens, closes, updates and maintains client records and files using ProLaw and LawDex;
- Answers clinics' mainline eight to ten hours a week;
- Serves as Notary Public for students, clients, and the law school.
- Assists student attorneys, student directors, and clinic faculty with miscellaneous need! s;
- Gather related data, help in analysis of past and current practices to determine improved administration of Center, will require putting together action memos and recommendation plans for the Center director to review;
- Creating and implementing surveys that measure the impact of the Center's clinics and its partner organizations for funders; Including researching and choosing the technology that would work best (ie, Google forms, Access database, Excel.
- Research and recommend administrative & operational solutions.
This position will provide ongoing administrative and program support to the Center for New Americans whose focus is the representation of immigrants and refugees. The Center is a newly funded entity within the Law School and is composed of three interrelated law clinics: the Immigration and Human Rights Clinic, a Detainee Rights Clinic, and the F! ederal Immigration Litigation Clinic. In addition, the Center houses an! active immigration Outreach and Education program and coordinates an active, formal partnership with three area non-profit law offices and large private law firms that provide pro bono services to non-citizens. The Center has received funding for four years, at which point, the Law School will re-apply for permanent funding.
This position is located in the Law Clinic office at the University of Minnesota Law School, on the west bank of the Minneapolis campus, and reports to the law clinics office administrator. This position will have significant responsibility for setup of the administrative procedures and support of the Center. Additionally, this position will be involved in developing and tracking metrics as part of the Center's reporting responsibilities and for the purpose of garnering future funds.
