Director of Advocacy

Responsible for helping design and then executing on multi-faceted advocacy, legislative and policy strategies that strengthen our organizationâs and regionâs ability to end hunger. Serve as t! he tactical leader in collaborating with multiple governmental and institutional constituencies and partners to drive successful action on these strategies. This person will be actively involved in the community, networking ongoing to tell the story of hunger and SHHâs work effectively and often to key advocacy stakeholders.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serve as a model in the organization for fostering and exemplifying Second Harvest Heartlandâs values: we deliver, we innovate, we lead with our hearts, we believe differences make us stronger.
Public Policy/Government
§ Develop or maintain working relationships with key staff and division leaders within the Minnesota Departments of Agriculture, Education, Health and Human Services;
Cultivate and maintain relationships with leaders of the Association of Minnesota Counties, the Minnesota Social Service Association and the Minnesota Association of County Social Service Administrators.
Assess complex governmental policy and programs that ar! e integral to hunger relief and SHHâs mission. Identify recommendations for policy changes. Synthesize complex data and package into easy-to-understand communications. Present and activate support for policy and program changes through those communications and relationship-building. Gather, synthesize and clearly communicate hunger data, relating cause and effect.
Legislative
Collaborate with Feeding America and other national and state organizations and coalitions to initiate, change or advance legislation around programs that reduce hunger.
Act as SHHâs Feeding America representative on legislative issues at the local, state and federal levels.
Monitor complex legislation and government activity around key hunger issues and from many sources, synthesize complex data and package into easy-to-understand communications and present and activate support through those communications.
Monitor changes in laws that impact hunger and develop strate! gies and tactics, including lobbying, to address them .
Monitor activity of, and arrange for or provide testimony to legislative committees as necessary.
Other Advocacy
Work creatively and effectively with local hunger organizations and platforms, members of the SHHâs Food Bank Cluster and others to help close the missing meal gap.
Qualifications (Required)
Minimum five yearsâ experience with and demonstrated success in ! conducting or managing advocacy, government relations and programs in a! non-profit environment.
Experience lobbying at the Minnesota legislature.
BA/BS degree in business, sociology, psychology, political science or equivalent;
Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the state and federal legislative process, how state and county government works, and how policies drive governmentâs work and the mechanisms/strategies for making policy changes to improve results and impact.
Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of how hunger impacts individuals and society at a personal, financial and institutional level (desired).
Well-developed interpersonal, relational and influencing skills.
Demonstrable active government/community network of contacts through which advocacy can be accomplished.
Ability to speak, write and present in a concise, clear, persuasive and credible manner.
Objectivity with an ability to sublimate personal politics from the issue.
Attention to detail and follow-through skills
Analytical ability, good business judgment, experience in data analysis and presentation
Must be able to speak and write in English
Proficiency in MS Office products.
