- Able to work in fast-paced, high-stress environment.
- Familiarity with MS Word, Excel and Access and basic internet based research skills.
- Good writing skills
- Customer service experience or experience working with diverse groups of people
- Please indicate if you have the ability to speak a foreign language (Spanish, Hmong, and Somali).
This position will have duties at a legal advice clinic and in the VLN office.
At the legal advice clinic: responsibilities include helping attorneys provide legal services to low-income persons by: obtaining demographic and legal issue information from clients; providing attorneys and clients with issue-appropriate legal resources; taking notes during the attorney-client meetings; and/or comp! leting court forms or making phone calls under attorney superv! ision.
Specific clinic locations include: the Hennepin County Government Center, Family Justice Center, Minneapolis City Hall, and CLUES (both Mpls and St. Paul offices).
At the VLN office ?responsibilities include: developing resources and materials for legal clinics, coordinating clinic schedules, client follow-up and/or other substantive or administrative tasks as needed
This is a great experience for anyone interested in law and the promoting of justice for all members of our communities. Training and orientation are provided. A commitment of 10-15 hrs/wk for 2+ semesters is preferred.
Program/Unit Description
VLN (Volunteer Lawyers Network, Ltd) is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization that provides free civil legal services (including full representation, brief services, and legal advice) to low-income clients. Volunteer attorneys assist with a wide range of issues such as consumer debt, landlord-tenant, em! ployer-employee, family law issues, immigration etc.
