Per the decision of the Crew Chief, the Drilling Assistant may be assigned the duties of a Driller (operating the drilling equipment, judging! access and utility clearance needs, and maintaining the drill rig and auxiliary vehicle) or of a Logger (collecting and handling soil samples, preparing field logs, etc.).
PRINCIPAL AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY :
General
1. At the beginning of each work day, check with Crew Chief to determine what equipment and materials will be needed for the dayâs assignment. Assemble and load equipment and materials so that the crew can get a timely start to work day.
Driller Role Duties
1. Set up equipment and operate the drill rig in a safe manner, for the purpose of obtaining soil and rock samples.
2. Assist Crew Chief in clearance of underground utilities/improvements.
3. Team with the Crew Chief in surveying test boring locations and elevations.
4. Install monitoring wells and piezometers.
5. Have knowledge of regulatory requirements for sealing of environmental boreholes, and properly seal boreholes pe! r those requirements if needed; also properly backfill non-env! ironmental boreholes.
6. Clean/restore site to a reasonable level.
7. Assist Crew Chief in sampling as needed to increase efficiency and productivity, and maintain safety.
Logger Role Duties
1. Obtain soil samples from test borings, using proper collection/handling methods (per the Geotechnical Field Manual).
2. Prepare written field logs of borings, including judging and documenting soil classifications and apparent geologic origin.
3. Assist Crew Chief in clearance of underground utilities/improvements.
4. Team with the Crew Chief in surveying test boring locations and elevations.
5. Assist Crew Chief in installing monitoring wells and piezometers.
6. Assist Crew Chief in backfilling boreholes, and clean/restore site to a reasonable level.
7. Assist Crew Chief in drilling procedures as needed to increase efficiency and productivity, and maintain safety.
General Duties
1. Maintain a good, professional relationship with the client/owner when they are present.
2. Accurately and completely fill out timesheets on a daily basis.
3. Perform other job duties as needed to meet department needs.
4. Participate in education and training. Review Geotechnical Field Manual and associated QA procedures, and have understanding of sampling/field log preparation requirements.
Possible Duties
1. Assist CPT Technician on dedicated CPT rig, or on CPT apparatus attached to a conventional drill rig.

2. To maintain the quality level of work needed for the project at an efficient rate, but still maintaining a safe manner.
DECISIONS :
Driller Role
1. Makes judgments of appropriate (efficient/productive, but still maintaining the required level of accuracy and safety) drilling procedures to allow obtai! ning high quality samples based on soil, rock, and/or ground water cond! itions present.
2. Decides when underground utilities have been properly cleared.
3. Judges access needs.
4. Evaluates access conditions and utility clearance risks, and decides whether office contact (Drilling Supervisor or Project Engineer) is needed.
Logger Role
1. Makes judgments of soil classifications and geologic descriptions.
2. Judges depths of soil layer contacts, and obtains representative jar sample (per the Geotechnical Field Manual) for each layer to maximize clarity/accuracy of laboratory logging.
3. Evaluates encountered soil/groundwater conditions, and decides whether office contact (Drilling Supervisor or Project Engineer) is needed to satisfy project quality and/or budget requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
1. Required:
A. Physically capable of and approved for, the physical labor required, work at hazardous waste sites, and with personal protective equipment.!
2. Preferred:
A. Mechanical ability (operator, repair, maintenance, welding, etc.)
B. Working knowledge of well codes.
C. Class A or B Driverâs License.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS :
1. Duties usually outdoors and away from main office/laboratory location.
2. Ability to lift up to 80 pounds and from a height of 30" regularly throughout the day (heavier items require handling with a two-person lift).
3. Ability to carry up to 80 pounds for a distance of 15'-20'.
4. Ability to stand 80% (often and on uneven surfaces) and walk 20% of the time with frequent bending and stooping.
5. A clear driving record while employed.
6. Occasional travel and out-of-town projects possible.
