SALARY RANGE: The Attorney level at which the offer is extended is based on the candidate's relevant years of experience.

Attorneys in the Dakota County Attorney's Office are assigned to handle the prosecution of criminal cases; or to provide civil legal services to Dakota County departments and provide legal representation to and on behalf of Dakota County; and other responsibilities as determined by the County Attorney. Under direct and regular supervision, performs work of varied and moderately complex difficulty in civil or criminal law.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school;
- Licensed to practice law in the State of Minnesota by the closing date.
Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Provide advice to law enforcement personnel, child protection workers, adult protection workers, county staff and others regarding their legal authority, responsibilities, investigation, and potential liabilities.
2. Review investigative reports pertaining to criminal activity to determine the appropriateness of a criminal prosecution.
3. Review evidence to determine whether it is admissible and whether a petition or complaint may be issued.
4. Comply with Dakota County Attorney charging and disposition guidelines for the charging and resolution of matters referred to the office for prosecution.
5! . Draft complaints, petitions, warrants, motions, memoranda, findings, orders, stipulations, post-trial memoranda, contracts, agreements, and other legal documents in assigned criminal or civil cases of basic to moderately complex difficulty.
6. Prepare assigned cases for trial before judge, jury, magistrate or referee; interview witnesses, plan and organize opening statements, direct and cross-examinations and closing argument; plan and organize admission of documentary and physical evidence.
7. Prepare appellate briefs and argue cases in appellate court.
8. Provide basic and more complex advice to County staff regarding legal obligations, authority and liability.
9. Prepare legal memoranda to county staff or for supervisory Attorney.
10. Represent the State of Minnesota and Dakota County in various state and federal courts at pretrial, trial, sentencing, appellate hearings, and post-trial proceedings related to the prosecution of criminal activity or c! ivil litigation.
11. Attend staff and other required meetings.
! 12. Attend continuing legal education courses.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities and Work Environment:
- Sufficient knowledge of state and federal constitutional law, statutes, court rules and case law to effectively and efficiently prosecute criminal activity with minimal guidance and supervision and to effectively and efficiently advise and represent county departments with minimal guidance and supervision.
- Knowledge of the applicable Rules of Professional Responsibility.
- Ability to analyze facts in light of applicable laws and evidentiary rules.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to plan, organize and present cases and other matters.
- Competency in utilizing computers, software and Internet resources to perform essential job duties.
