Location: Duluth, Minnesota

Description: Minnesota Judicial Branch is presently looking of Guardian ad Litem right now, this position will be settled in Minnesota. The Minnesota State Guardian ad Litem Program is currently seeking a part time (30 hours per week) Guardian ad Litem employee to service a caseload of child abuse, neglect, and family case matters in the Juvenile and Family Court of Saint Louis County.

A Guardian ad Litem is an individual appointed by the court to advocate for the best interests of children in juvenile and family court proceedings. Guardians ad Litem interact with judges, social workers, attorneys, and a variety of other professionals. The positions involve visiting clients in their home, foster care, and appearing in court. Must be able to maintain a flexible schedule, often requiring evening and weekend hours to meet the demands/needs of the clients and the position. Travel is required. The position may be a teleworking arrangement working out of one's home or working in an office setting. A stipend will be provided to offset the costs of a home office, when required.

Example of Duties:

  • Advocate for the best interests of the child
  • Gather case information through review of documents, personal interviews, home visits, case meetings, and other sources
  • Maintain accurate case notes and files
  • Make timely written and oral reports to the court containing facts, conclusions, and recommendations
  • Participate in court hearings; testify as required
  • Monitor cases for compliance with court orders
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Exercise independent judgment
  • Comply with applicable state and federal laws and court rules
Typical Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, education, counseling, nursing or related disciple; Law Degree or paralegal training. Significant experience working with families and children is required.
  • An abiding interest in children and their rights and needs
  • Sufficient listening, speaking, and writing skills to successfully conduct interviews, prepare written reports, and make oral presentations
  • Knowledge and appreciation of ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds of the population to be served
  • Ability to relate to children, family members, and professionals in a careful and confidential matter
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and good common sense
  • No prior involvement in any conduct or activity that would interfere with the ability to perform the duties assigned by the court.
  • Ability to effectively manage and diffuse high conflict, complex situations.
  • Pass criminal background checks including comprehensive interstate fingerprint checks every three years.
  • A valid driver's license with auto insurance coverage.
  • Must provide own means of transportation.
  • Experience as a guardian ad litem, completion of the guardian ad litem pre-service orientation requirements, and a demonstrated comprehension of the responsibilities of guardians ad litem are desirable.
