Acts as subject matter expert for legal, compliance, transactional and business requirements and develops one or more specialties. Works with representatives from various departments on developing and modifying practices and procedures to conform with legal requirements. Ensures all forms, policies and procedures of TCF are in compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements. Formulates and implements corporate legal policy concerning a variety of legal issues. Drafts, reviews and revises high priority legal documents involving TCF’s interests. Prepares and reviews contracts involving leases, licenses, purchases, sales, real estate, employment, insurance and other matters. Identifies, researches and analyzes relevant federal, state and local requirements and translates the requirements into alternative business solutions. Acts as a liaison with outside law firms. Represents TCF in significant corporate litigation and legal transactions. Keeps informed of legislation affecting various company operations. Studies proposed and existing legislation. Provides guidance and training to other attorneys, paralegals or interns. Accountable for the development, training and results of the supervised staff. Plans and determines course of action regarding legal disputes, including the commencement or defense of litigation and the disposition of litigation.
Law degree (J.D. or L.L.M.) Licensed to practice law in applicable states/jurisdictions 8+ years related work experience in legal department of a financial institution or law firm. Ability to deal effectively and confidently with employees at all levels of the organization including management and other attorneys. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Comprehensive working knowledge of laws, rules and regulations which affect the commercial lending activities of TCF, in particular, equipment financing and leasing. Strong interpersonal and facilitator skills, and excellent ability to coach and inspire employees. Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Specialization in commercial lending and equipment finance with an emphasis in Articles 9 and 2A of the Uniform Commercial Code. Commercial real estate lending experience
Supervisory Responsibilities
May supervise Corporate Counsel, paralegals and / or legal assistants
