This Assistant Probation Officer posting is intended to create a roster that will be used to fill JUVENILE FACILITY BASED vacancies that may occur for up to one year. Interested parties are encouraged to apply.

Facility Assistant Probation officers work with juveniles who have been ordered to our juvenile detention/treatment facility and our day treatment program. Our Juvenile Service Center (JSC) provides, detention, short term treatment, long term tr! eatment, gender specific treatment, and sex offender treatment! to juveniles ordered to the specific program.

Position Information:
These positions work within the Dakota County Juvenile Service Center 24 hour secured facility or New Chance Day treatment Program and are responsible for interacting with offenders on a face-to-face basis for the purpose of implementing case plans, preparing progress and violation reports, and making referrals to appropriate community programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Corrections, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, Education, or related behavioral science field
OR
  • Two years of full! -time related post-secondary coursework in one of the above fields AND two years of related paraprofessional experience in a corrections or human services agency
OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required license(s):
  • Valid driver's license required
  • First Aid/CPR certificate within 6 months of hire.
Duties & Responsibilities:
These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.
1. Manage and provide direct services to offenders to monitor compliance with court ordered conditions and to implement the case plan.
2. Conduct intake process and makes appropriate referrals.
3. Prepare reports such as progress, discharge, transfer and submit to court.
! 4. Assist in the preparation of violation reports for review by Probati! on Officers or Unit Supervisors.
5. Make collateral contacts with employers or others involved in the offender's programming as necessary.
6. Manage/maintain offender records.
7. Provide court coverage by presenting Probation Officer recommendations at in-court hearings.
8. Participate in the restorative process by interviewing offenders, explaining the programs, determining if the offender is appropriate to participate in programs; solicits partnerships with community agencies.
9. Respond to offender's questions, concerns and emergencies.
10. Maintain the safety and security of the JSC Campus to include observing offenders for concerning behaviors, evaluating/maintaining equipment, inspecting rooms, maintaining population counts, maintaining equipment inventory, and making perimeter checks.
11. Staff the control center to include monitoring all program activities in the JSC, communicating in emergencies and alerts, controlling movement of all pe! rsons in the JSC, monitors the alarm systems and surveillance, answering phones, and controlling keys.
13. Monitor inventories of offender medications, supplies and personal property and audits offender files for completeness.
14. Provide direct offender service to include: medication administration, meal preparation, crisis intervention, court preparation and offender intake.
15. Facilitate and participate in offender programming.
16. Assist in preparation and maintenance of offender records and reports.
17. Collect and maintain daily program activity data and offender follow-up.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities and Work Environment:
  • Knowledge of evidence based practices in probation including assessment, case planning, and cognitive interventions.
  • Knowledge of MN adult and juvenile correction/law enforcement statutes.
  • Knowledge of DHS rules/Correctional Reporting Statues.
  • Knowledge of data pri! vacy practices.
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement investig! ative techniques.
  • Knowledge of proper urinalysis testing and Breathalyzer procedures.
  • Knowledge of restorative justice principles and practices.
  • Knowledge and understanding of ethnic diversities.
  • Knowledge of community resources and other programs available to offenders such as chemical dependency programs, gambling treatment, mental health treatment, education programs, money management courses, individual counseling, and cognitive skills groups.
  • Knowledge of victim's rights (i.e. MN Reparations Board).
  • Investigative and critical thinking skills.
  • Analysis and interpretation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member within department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with offenders, coworkers, law enforcement officials, judges and treatment facilities.!
  • Knowledge of and the ability to operate several complex computer systems such as MAXIS, CSTS, MNCIS, Microsoft Office. Ability to resolve problems related to these computer systems.
  • Ability to work under stress and use discretion in making decisions.
  • Ability to advise people in crisis situations and make decision leading to crisis resolution.
  • Ability to prioritize work according to offender and agency need.
  • Ability to assess a person's social, economic, emotional, mental, and health needs.
  • Ability to utilize motivational interviewing and victim empathy skills.
  • Knowledge of general and specific safety and security issues of detainment.
  • Knowledge of individual and group social behavior.
  • Ability to perform basic safety and security skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed within the juvenile detention center. All positions have a lifting requirement of up to 20 pounds on an o! ccasional basis and 10 pounds on a frequent basis. Some positions have ! a lifting requirement of up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis and 20 pounds on a frequent basis. Employees may be exposed to hazardous materials such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids and exposure to intense noise may occur. Equipment used may include, but is not limited to, computer, scanner, printer, calculator, telephone, BCA, breathalyzer, restraint chair, handcuffs, EHM and GPS equipment, Dictaphone, UA collection materials, pager, CSTS, MNCIS, camera and copy machines.

Pursuant to Dakota County Policy and Procedures Manual Section 3240 (13), this position is designated as Safety Sensitive.
